How to measure for sod
Pace or tape the lawn in feet, breaking irregular shapes into rectangles and adding them up. For curved edges along beds, measure to the longest point — the 5–10% waste factor covers the trimming. Subtract large permanent features (house footprint, driveways, big patios) but don't bother subtracting small beds; the waste factor absorbs them.
A standard pallet covers about 450 square feet — but confirm, because some farms sell 500 sq ft pallets and big-box stores sell by the individual 10 sq ft roll. Ordering by the pallet is 20–30% cheaper per square foot than buying rolls piecemeal.
Ordering: timing is everything
Sod is a perishable product, not a building material. It should be cut, delivered, and installed within 24 hours — ideally the same day. In summer heat, rolled sod can cook itself dead in a matter of hours. Schedule delivery for the morning of install day, have the soil fully prepped the day before, and have enough hands that laying outpaces delivery.
Order for the day after a cool stretch if you can — sod laid into cool, moist soil establishes faster than sod laid into baked ground. And never let the delivery driver stack pallets in full sun while you finish prepping; shade and a hose-down buy you time.
Soil prep (the unskippable step)
- Kill or remove the old lawn — sod over weeds becomes a weed farm. Spray, wait two weeks, or strip with a sod cutter.
- Till 3–4 inches deep and rake level. Sod roots need loose soil to knit into; laid on compacted grade, it sits like a rug and dries out.
- Grade away from the house — minimum 2% slope (¼" per foot) for the first 10 feet.
- Starter fertilizer raked into the top inch gives roots phosphorus exactly where they need it.
- Roll it after laying. A water-filled lawn roller ($20/day rental) presses sod into soil contact — the single biggest factor in fast rooting.
Watering new sod
Weeks 1–2: water 2–3 times daily, keeping the sod and the top inch of soil consistently moist — not soggy. Lift a corner: the underside should be damp, and the soil beneath dark. Weeks 3–4: taper to once daily. After a month, switch to deep watering 2–3 times per week to train deep roots.
Mow when the grass hits 4 inches — usually 2–3 weeks in — cutting no more than a third of the blade. Keep foot traffic off for the first 2–3 weeks; the "tug test" (gentle pull resists) tells you roots have taken.
What affects sod cost
Sod material: $0.30–$0.80/sq ft (bermuda and fescue at the low end, zoysia and specialty blends higher). Delivery: $50–$150 per load. Professionally installed with soil prep: $1.50–$3.00/sq ft — a 1,000 sq ft lawn runs $1,500–$3,000 turnkey.
